Last summer, Amnesty International caused outrage around the world when the human rights organisation voted to give their backing to a ‘decriminalisation model’ which would mean it is no longer a criminal offence to sell sex.
Earlier this month, the hotly anticipated interim report from Parliament’s Home Affairs Select Committee about sex work in the UK also came to the conclusion that decriminalisation is the best way to protect workers.
YES!! It’s a start. There’s a long way to go in terms of protecting the rights of sex workers, but it’s a start. As a former sex worker, I can tell you that there was a large amount of anxiety surrounding the potential danger of the job. Due to the illegal nature of sex work, it’s really hard to maintain a safe work environment. Not that sex work is inherently dangerous, it just sucks to have to live in uncertainty when it comes to your own safety. No one should have to life and/or work that way.
Thankfully in recent years there has been a pushback against complacency, with a growing wave of innovators looking to solve the industry’s creative stagnation. And now an Industrial Design lecturer from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT), Judith Glover, has launched the world’s first university course focusing exclusively on sex-toy design.
Students in her class each have to undertake an individual project, choosing what area of the subject they want to focus on.
“Their concepts had to be grounded in good research and evidence. So the first few weeks was the group mapping out the area of sexual health and wellbeing,” explained Glover, in an interview with Future of Sex.
“One student did a project about sex toys and older women, which she has carried on into an honours project with me this year.”
“Other types of projects the student have looked into were about Prostitus, Pregnancy and the Perenium, how to help women with sexual trauma enjoy sexual practice again, how to keep a long-term relationship sexually fresh with game playing, Vaginismus and erectile dysfunction,” she said.
Where was this course when I was in university? Life ain’t all bad when you realize you life in a world where you can take a sex design course.

“As a performer, I could be on set all day waiting to shoot a scene, so I usually just eat and suffer the consequences of feeling heavy rather than starve myself,” says Chanel Preston, a six-year veteran of the adult industry and president of the Adult Performer Advocacy Committee. Ryan Driller—whom you may recognize from star turns in porn parodies like Superman XXX, Batman v Superman XXX, and Supergirl XXX—notes he’s “not really a breakfast person,” but still underscores the importance of eating before getting on set. “The sex that I have on set is more of an acrobatic, endurance, marathon. The positioning is more complex than in your private life; in more precarious situations, and with a minimum 25 [minutes] of sex footage required… You want to eat something that will fuel you, and keep you going.”
The closest anyone came to outright avoiding eating was VRTube.XXX founder Ela Darling, who prefers to eschew traditional food choices in favor of a glass of Soylent. Before she discovered Silicon Valley’s favorite meal replacement, Darling would prep for a scene with a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich and a green coffee drink from Starbucks; but “Soylent makes me feel a hell of a lot better and it doesn’t add all the carbs and calories.” Darling also notes that “[Soylent] makes me feel satiated but not full and just generally good”—all important things if your job involves looking sexy on camera.
They eat peaches… and bananas. Peaches, bananas and nothing else. Except on anal and deepthroat days, those days they skip breakfast.
