The biggest pay-per-view event of the year occurred last month and though the event suffered some technical difficulties, an estimated 6 million people tuned in to watch Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor square off. It was a good night for fight fans, especially those who were rooting for the undefeated American.
I’ve been a fan of combat sports since high school and trained in both the sweet science and Brazilian jujitsu sporadically though college. Though I was never dedicatred enough to dream of competing as a professional, I did get my ass kicked enough to profoundly appreciate the martial arts and consider myself an MMA aficionado.
Boxing will always be a passion of mine and like most people who have seen both men compete I picked Floyd Mayweather to win. It was a great fight and though the outcome was expected it was still entertaining. I was having so much fun I didn’t even notice I wasn’t masturbating as much as I normally would be on a Saturday night.
It turns out I wasn’t alone.
Never ones to let good data go unanalyzed, the number munchers at Pornhub Insights noticed a distinct change in traffic during the event. They used this data to create some easily digestible information that they then graphed for our convenience. Let’s take a look!
The main event occurred just after midnight and despite the costing $100 on pay-per-view millions of Americans tuned in. Feeling like they should get their money’s worth, Americans apparently watched more of the card resulting in a drastic 22% decline Pornhub traffic. Worldwide the “Money fight” resulted in a global 12% dip in porn viewership before people resumed their regularly scheduled genital manipulation.
Meanwhile in Ireland, Conor McGregor fans not only caused a nationwide 11% decline in Pornhub traffic, they apparently drowned their sorrows after the fight in the warm embrace of internet pornography causing a 174% increase above average. Holy moly! As Conor would say, “we didn’t come here to take part, we came here to take over.”
