As a San Diego Chargers fan I’m emotionally detached from the Super Bowl by default. Though I appreciate the high stakes atmosphere of the big game, the three hours of commercials they weave around it make it hard to watch. Plus my team has given up on winning one but demands billions of taxpayer dollars to build a new stadium.
Still, it’s one of the most watched events on television year after year.
The media frenzy doesn’t stop after the game is over. Lazy sports journalists will drum up any drama to fill the time between the Super Bowl ending and the start of the baseball season. People spend the next couple of days talking about their favorite commercial and criticizing the half time show, and you’re pretty much left in the dregs of pop culture if you didn’t tune in.
Our friendly neighborhood statisticians at Pornhub Insights recognize the popularity of the Super Bowl, and they also know it’s hard to watch internet porno and the game at the same time. This time they’ve taken all the data from Pornhub traffic and created a few nifty graphs to show how it was affected by Super Bowl 50.
It’s no secret that the Super Bowl is most popular in the United States. Considering we’ve won 50 of them straight and the rest of the world has yet to even qualify, it’s not surprising that the US would see a greater decline in Pornhub traffic during the heart of the event. Canadians also seemed to have been distracted by the game, which is understandable considering their close proximity to the states.
The very slight decline seen by the rest of the world is interesting. Maybe some people heard a football game was on and tuned in expecting to see small men diving to the ground holding their shins, and instead saw fat men running into each other for 10 seconds followed by four minutes of commercials.
Within the United States we see that Colorado, home of the Denver Broncos, saw the biggest decline in average traffic with the Panthers’ home of North Carolina following suit. What’s interesting is after the Panthers’ lost, the state of North Carolina saw a small increase in traffic over the average. Maybe upset fans decided to drown their feelings in masturbation.
Both states apparently didn’t care for Cold Play’s performance as Pornhub saw a slight spike in traffic during the halftime show. How curious!
