Taxes suck. Depending on your profession it sometimes feels like the more money you earn, the less you have after Caesar takes what he’s owed. You work your ass off all year just to get blown the fuck out in April and wonder if it was worth the effort. It’s as if the system is stacked against honest people.
Nobody knows this struggle better than the hardworking and scantily clad women of America’s strip clubs.
Just by nature of working in what the government classifies as the entertainment industry, strippers and strip clubs are subject to a slew of additional taxes. However, by using some of the same creative interpretations of law that the government uses to cheat people out of health care and assault rifles they found a workaround.
The Penthouse Executive Club in Manhattan claimed that its dancers were providing therapy to customers, and because therapy is a non-taxable service they weren’t required to report their earnings. According the treasury department, this cost New York $3.1 million in state taxes. That’s a lot of oily butt-dollars!
This particular strip club’s tax woes go back to 2010 when they tried to create their own currency to avoid paying taxes on cash transactions. They argued that because customers were spending “executive dollars” instead of regular American currency, they never required to pay taxes on the money they brought in.
When the government shot down that scheme, the Penthouse Executive Club further argued that when their dancers are rubbing their crotches on men’s laps until they cum in their jeans they are not being entertained. People who come into their business holding onto to stress and excess dollar bills who receive relief are obviously experiencing therapy. Makes sense to me.
Despite lawyers and accountants using similar arguments to save politicians and the nation’s wealthy elite from paying billions in taxes, New York’s Department of Taxation and Finance determined all of the strip club’s arguments were legal bullshit and demanded every penny of what was owed.
Hmph!
