Treasurer Embezzles $800k From Church, Spends It On Porn

I’m a huge fan of churches. Not so much for all the religion that happens behind their closed doors but because most of the ones in Southern California sell tamales on Sunday. Local governments usually turn a blind eye to churches selling food without a license, and because all the ingredients are donated 100 percent of the profits go to helping the needy.

In the case of on church in Ohio, that need is feeding the porn and escort addiction of their treasurer.

61-year-old Garry Meyer pleaded guilty to aggravated theft after embezzling $800,000 from his congregation in West Chester Township. He also admitted to spending the money on desires of the flesh- including drugs, pornography, and high-end escorts.

The man apologized to the church and his family, which is what everyone does after they get caught. Then again, how do we know it wasn’t god’s will for the man to spend money on porn and sex? Only god can judge Garry Meyer.

Oh, and judges too as Butler County Judge Michael Oster sentenced the man to five years in prison.

I think one of the more interesting parts of this story is that a church in the Bible belt can lose hundreds of thousands of dollars without noticing. A well-attended house of worship can pull in a tremendous amount of tax-free income, which they use to improve the community as they see fit.

For example, a few years ago we read about a church in Colorado that had so much money they were able to buy a strip club just to shut it down for the sake of projecting children… just not the children whose parents were employed by the business they shut down.

With millions of dollars passing through churches all over the country, it’s probably not uncommon for someone to be skimming off the top. Whether or not that money is also spent on sex and drugs is unknown.

It’s clear Garry Meyer has problems to work out, and maybe taking a break his criminal life of excess will be good him. Who knows! Maybe he’ll find a church he can attend in prison from which he can embezzle cigarettes and ketchup packets.
