I’m not a religious man, but I respect those who are and appreciate the role religion plays in their lives. Spiritual people tend to be altruistic partly because it’s the right thing to do, and partly because of the wishes of an invisible wizard who sometimes encourages them to wear special hats. While there are a wayward few who do horrible things to other people because of their beliefs, most of them are alright.
Religious leaders, on the other hand, often rub me the wrong way. These people tend to hold themselves to a high moral standard and are quick to judge the actions of others. Yet at the end of the day they’re just regular people.
Take the example Tallahassee’s Pastor O. Jermaine Simmons.
Simmons does tremendous amounts of good for his community and has devoted his life to helping the needy. Between organizing shelters for the homeless during harsh weather and providing school supplies for children, he does all he can to meet the physical and spiritual needs of Florida’s capital.
However on January 17, Simmons was less than a saint when he was spotted fleeing an apartment naked after being chased by the angry and armed husband of the woman he was fucking. Whoops!
According to the woman, Simmons came to her apartment to discuss starting a business with the goal of providing clothes to less fortunate kids. After one thing led to another and the pair ended up having sex in her daughter’s bedroom when her husband arrived home earlier than expected.
She quickly called police after the husband caught them having sex and retrieved his gun while threatening to kill the pastor. After escaping from the apartment wearing absolutely nothing, the naked pastor hid behind a fence while the angry husband probably threw a tantrum.
When police arrived cooler heads quickly prevailed and they negotiated the return of the pastor’s clothes, wallet, and car keys. The husband was not arrested for as his wife told police he never threatened her and Simmons declined to press charges.
News of the pastor’s affair and naked escape quickly went viral. The pastor addressed the scandal in a masterful sermon wherein he forgave himself and asked everyone to do the same. Hopefully he is able to return to his life of helping the needy and having affairs without getting caught in flagrante delicto.
