Being naked is not always sexual. When I was a model for Life Drawing classes, I’d strip down to nothing at all and position my body so that other people could sketch my curves. It was fun, strenuous work, and being a part of someone’s creative process was pretty amazing. I made it a point to not look at any of the drawings that the artists created because i didn’t want to judge them at all. Looking at something for the first time, you can’t always prepare your initial reaction. I didn’t want my wide-open eyes to express any kind of inadvertant distaste or pleasure.
Yoga is an activity that blurs the line of exercise and art. Difficult poses can make my mouth gape, because I can not even imagine that my body transform into a pretzel like some yogi’s can. Just for a frame of reference, check out this YouTube video:
Nutso, right?
I perpetually sexualize situations that shouldn’t be sexual…which makes me part of the problem…but I feel like, if I could put my heels behind my head like that, I would spend most of my days fisting myself on cam while perverts stroked along with me.
That being said, I read an article recently about a yoga studio in New York that is now offering fully nude yoga classes.
I’m intrigued, not because it’s hot to be naked in front of strangers, but because I’m in my element when I don’t have any clothes on. It makes me feel like I’m completely uninhibited and completely free from the control of society. If everyone is naked in the room with me, then it’s even better.
In the FAQ for their classes, Bold & Naked Yoga state:
I’m looking for a peep show / sex club.
Don’t waste your time. The energy in the room is very clear and members who come to Bold & Naked Yoga are very focused on celebrating their bodies through yoga. We have no problem asking someone to leave if his or her behavior is inappropriate.
So it’s totally clear that this is not a sexual thing. This is not a pick up joint, or a voyeur’s dream exercise class. It’s a place where you are able to be comfortable while you’re surrounded by other naked people who are interested in yoga.
Being naked means being free from the world. You’re more in tune with the world around you when you aren’t covered in fabric. Think of the most perfect shower…the water splashing all over your skin, the heat of the steam relaxing your muscles.
This is what naked yoga is all about. Being grounded and being free with no judgement of those around you.
Would you ever try doing yoga naked in a class? Let me know in the comments!
