A lot of feminists have gotten their panties in a twist over Rihanna‘s video for “Bitch Better Have My Money” – because of the violence and nudity – going so far as calling it misogynist, but that’s a rather simplistic interpretation. There is a divide between white feminists and black feminists that is a mile long and is nowhere close to being bridged. You have to look at this video through the lens of gender politics AND race politics.
As Mia McKenzie of Black Girl Dangerous said: “Let me tell you what I see when I watch this video: I see a black woman putting her own well-being above the well-being of a white woman.” I can see how that can be disconcerting to certain people, but the fact of the matter is that white feminists have been putting their needs ahead of black feminists for years – not taking into account the impact of racism when it comes to black feminists!
I’m not saying their should be a reversal of roles, I don’t want anyone putting anyone else down, but, for once, in a music video, it’s nice to see someone flipping the script. It’s a revenge fantasy video, it’s meant to unnerve and unsettle, but it’s also about power, about taking what’s yours and not letting other people take advantage of you.
The video would be torture porn if it was a man kidnapping a women to get his money back, and I’d be right there with all the other feminists complaining about it, because we’ve suffered those things in real life and in the media for millions of years. Okay, maybe not millions of years… I was a teenager when MTV became a thing with its music videos that featured fucked up race and gender depictions and I’m not that old.
Point is, that shit has been done to death (quite literally in some cases) and we don’t want to consume the same old misogynistic crap anymore. We are educated spectators and we demand more from our entertainment. Sure, we still like to see the boobs and the blood, but we also want a change when it comes to the gender and racial stereotypes The Man has been feeding us all these years.
That said, it’s a killer song and the video is fun to watch whether you’re looking at it superficially or you’re applying your own gender and race politics to it. Also, dat ass is a masterpiece.
