- HBO Orders David Simon’s Porn-World Drama ‘The Deuce’ Starring James Franco & Maggie Gyllenhaal To Series (Indie Wire)
Starring James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal, “The Deuce” finds Simon trading the drug world of “The Wire” and “The Corner” for sex, with the show chronicling the rise and legalization of pornography, from the free ‘n’ easy days of the early 1970s, to the AIDS stricken era of the mid-1980s. But that’s not all: Franco will be pulling double duty, playing the dual roles of twin brothers Vincent Martino and Frankie Martino, who were fronts for mob control of the porn industry. Meanwhile, Gyllenhaal has the role of Candy, a hooker pulled into porn.
This had the potential to be good, very good. Let’s just hope it doesn’t fall into terrible sex work cliches and stereotypes, which is a serious danger considering the premise of the show.
“When the girls first get into the business and they’re new, I think they can command additional money for different sex acts,” said Steven Hirsch, owner of Vivid, one of the biggest adult entertainment studios. “Initially they make more money, then it depends on how popular they become.”
Here’s how things break down. For a “traditional” sex scene between a man and a woman, the average actress’ compensation is typically between $800 and $1,000, depending on the studio’s budget. Top-tier performers can earn as much as $1,500, occasionally $2,000, while newcomers with bad representation might earn as little as $300.
More extreme acts, as you might expect, command higher rates. The most extreme — unsuitable for describing in polite conversation — can go for $1,800 to $2,500.
It’s hard to say if these figures are accurate as people are pretty tight lipped about the size of their paychecks, but if these figures are true, I don’t think porn actresses get paid nearly enough.
The following images are from a collection of over one thousand 35mm negatives made in 1984 by an amateur photographer known only as “B. Mason.” They were subsequently abandoned, and later discovered in an Echo Park garage in 2005, in a stack of withered, moldy envelopes from different one-hour photo labs.
Hidden inside those envelopes was an encyclopedic collection of exotic dancers from several downtown Los Angeles venues: The Dragon Lady, The Cameo and The Last Call. Each envelope of negatives had meticulous notation indicating the subjects’ names and in some instances the places where they were photographed. Each image is its own treasure trove of history, mystery and prurience.
That was a pretty awesome find. Noting like obsessive amateur photography to give you a clear snapshot of what the ’80s really looked like.
