Power Plant Uses Beauty Pageant To Pick Engineer, Apologizes

Post image for Power Plant Uses Beauty Pageant To Pick Engineer, Apologizes

Sometimes people do seemingly stupid things with the best of intentions, and the internet is there to make sure everyone knows about it.

Take for example Czech nuclear power plant CEZ Temelín. In order to promote their initiative on hiring more female nuclear engineers, they decided to run a promotion showcasing 10 women who were applying for an internship. Rather than show the women, all of whom are grad students, in some scientific situation holding a glowing green rod the company instead had them compete in a beauty pageant to “win” an internship.

This didn’t sit well with numerous activists groups or even people who are at least remotely socially conscious.

News outlets and social media platforms were quick to label the stunt as sexist, pointing out that forcing women to parade around half naked was “ignorant and stupid” and did nothing to highlight their actual abilities as nuclear engineers. CEZ Temelín immediately recognized the criticism and issued an apology to the 10 women- all of whom were given an internship. All’s well that ends well?

All news-related commentary aside aside, let’s get down to the real issue at hand. The brass tacks.

My appreciation of Eastern European women is well documented on this website. With their thin frames, long legs, and delicate facial features it’s no wonder Eastern Europe is where some of the world’s greatest super models and porn stars hail from. Telling me a power plant just hired 10 female Czech interns just makes me want to send them my resume, and/or masturbate to Fake Agent.

In all fairness, CEZ Temelín conceived the beauty pageant for the right reasons and it was basically a success. They got the message out that the nuclear industry is looking for a few good women and they got people across the world talking about their company. The fact that it stirred up quite a bit of controversy was either bad decision making or great viral marketing.

Briefly offending a few people in the process is simply the cost of doing business on the internet, I suppose.
