American politics have been a source of amusement for most of the world lately. Even if you don’t feel the Bern or want to make America great again, there have been plenty of memes and sound bites to keep people all over the internet informed of what’s going on in the United States.
Just when it seemed like the ridiculousness of our presidential race would over shadow any actual news, Britain voted to exit from the European Union. The reaction by Britons and other Europeans quickly became one of the fastest growing trends on social media.
Personally I don’t really know much about the political climate in Britain or the EU. I know the Queen of England looks suspiciously like the Queen of Canada, and both women have about the same amount of influence on what happens politically in the United Kingdom. To figure out what this exit would mean for Europeans, I turned to the internet.
The repercussions of Britain’s exit weren’t only a mystery to me, as enough people searched for information on the “Brexit” that it momentarily passed porn as the internet’s most searched subject. Whoa!
To put that accomplishment into perspective, you have to consider that almost any list of the internet’s hottest trends or searches will automatically exclude porn because it’s always number one. It would be like making a list of the top five things to do when you’re bored alone- masturbating is going to be on top unless you decide to ignore it.
While it’s understandable that the majority of Americans were left confused by the successful passing of the vote, many Europeans were also unsure of what it meant. Searches about what the exit and what was going to happen next spiked in the UK and Europe after the vote.
At any rate, the excitement of Brexit is dying down but the fallout has yet to begin. Supporters of the UK’s departure from the EU see this as a victory and believe it’s what’s best for everyone while those who opposed it fear England may be headed for a recession. Many people suspect there was also a large number of people who were never fully informed but still voted anyway.
How curious!
No matter what happens to our friends in Europe we can all be certain of one thing: porn will always be there when your country goes to shit and you need a break after searching for affordable homes in Canada all night.
