We read a lot of articles that claim regular sex contributes to a healthy lifestyle and they all kind of follow the same principle. Swapping fluids while doing horizontal tango has been proven to help balance one’s hormones, provide a small burst of cardiovascular exercise, and gosh dang it having sex just feels good.
While there may be a few tortured prudes who use misquoted research to blame sex for all of life’s horrors, the fact is sex has been linked to leading a healthier and more successful life- it may also help prevent people from binge eating sweets.
According to a study by researchers from York University there may be a link between production of the hormone oxytocin and behaviors associated with excessive eating. This is relevant to our interests because oxytocin is also known as the love hormone and is released after orgasm.
Hmm!
The team of scientists studied a group of people aged 27-50 and assessed their personalities, eating habits, and other psychological traits. They then took blood samples from everyone in the study and analyzed their DNA in order to identify any correlations between genetics and eating habits.
When all the science-dust settled they determined a correlation exists between the likelihood to eat excessively and one’s ability to produce oxytocin.
People whose DNA indicated a variation that favored production of the hormone were up to 37 percent less likely to admit to overeating. The data also revealed that other variations in the production of oxytocin could be linked to having a decreased appetite and other behaviors linked with binge eating high calorie foods.
While it sounds like these scientists were specifically looking at variations in DNA for this, it doesn’t change the fact that the correlation exists. In other words I think this discovery should be taken with a grain of salt.
At any rate, oxytocin is also known as the cuddle hormone and is associated with the feelings of trust and closeness that people experience after sex. If the presence of this hormone is responsible for curbing one’s appetite for excessive sweets and fatty foods, then it’s possible that regular sex may help people maintain healthy eating habits.
Even if this isn’t how science works at all it at least sounds like an excuse to try and have more sex. Just in case you needed one!
