When we heard Utah was attempting to ban pornography, we had a lot of questions. Who was going to set the standard of what makes something pornographic? Will they have to create a special task force to enforce this ban? If I masturbate to a Lane Bryant catalog is the government going to take it away?
For the most part people considered rumors of the move something like a rattling of the saber by religious lawmakers. It would be almost impossible to know if anyone was internet browsing porn and the logistics of trying to monitor what people do in their homes would taking something on par with wizardry- like a dog that can sniff out porn.
Oh they have those? Well, shit.
Police K-9 unit in Utah has acquired a dog named URL that has been specially trained to sniff out porn. Rather than detecting the scent of masturbatory lotions or any physical evidence of erotic content, URL (pronounced the same as Earl) is able to sniff out high tech storage devices like thumb drives and memory cards. Hmm!
To be honest we have no idea if this is why the dog was acquired, but given Utah’s recent track record of trying to make pornography illegal we have to at least consider the possibility.
We’re assuming the dog will be used to sniff out storage devices someone might be trying to hide, because a thumb drive someone has hidden under a hollowed out floorboard is probably going to have some pretty brutal stuff on it.
The idea of using dogs to detect porn is pretty misguided anyway. In this modern age of Pornhub, most people stream their porn with literally no trace of the transaction left on their device aside from an easily cleared browser history. For the old school purists with subscriptions to their favorite pay sites, they’re more likely to hide their digital stash of high definition porn in a maze of folders like “Home/User/Storage/Stuff/Resume/Cover Letters/Not Porn.”
Hiding all your renegade pornography on a flash drive under your mattress is pretty much inviting special technology-sniffing to find it.
