Inspired by the stories fellow actors had to tell, prolific queer-porn performer Jiz Lee decided to collate these tales in the newly released Coming Out Like a Porn Star.

“Everyone had a story to tell. Some were heartbreaking, others casual. Some surprised and inspired me,” Lee explains in the introduction to the book.

“They taught me about stigma. They revealed privilege. Gave me relief. Made me furious. They encouraged my own process of coming out. Through their examples, I found myself more prepared.” […]

“Hearing the stories from people I admired and respected gave me the strength to begin talking to my family and try to undo stigmas of my own.”

Let’s face it, one of the reasons porn stars have a hard time coming out to their friends and family is because of all the negative backlash they’re likely to receive. It always struck me as odd that so many watch porn and enjoy it, but then they turn around and treat the people who provide them with said porn like pieces of shit. Makes no sense, yo.

Beyond that, however, there’s this: I don’t always want to arrive in their messages as a disembodied set of tits or as one of many spectacular butts out there in the world. Sometimes I want to arrive as myself. Sometimes I’ll even send my face as a power move. After a bunch of shots that don’t reveal my identity, I’ll send a very clear face shot — looking somewhere between sensual and smug, head up, stomach down on a bed with my ass visible in the background. It is the sexting equivalent of photobombing the detached, eroticized body shots with my specific, highly personal face. “You will look at me when I’m sexting you, do you understand me?” is the loud and clear message of these interruptions of otherwise anonymous parts.

Selfies

Damn, she makes a good case for including your face in your nude selfies. People are jerks, though, so you’re definitely rolling the dice.

Dr. Katherine Goldey and Dr. Sari van Anders of the University of Michigan set out to test a straightforward hypothesis: The more choice women had over the pornography they watched, the more aroused they would become. Unsurprisingly, that prediction came true.

But something unexpected happened in their study, too. Women who freely chose their own erotica also experienced more disgust, guilt, and embarrassment than women who were given limited or no choice over their viewing material.

Watching-Porn

What, why? I guess by giving people choice you’re giving them agency and with agency comes a sense of responsibility for your own choices and with responsibility comes more shame… That’s fucked up.
