We read a lot of sex studies and the results, while interesting, are always kind of obvious. Though we may not need an extensive study on hundreds of people to figure out wealthy people have better sex lives or heavy drinking leads to risky hook ups- it’s still nice to see our assumptions confirmed by science.
This study on self-confidence and sexual activity is no different.
The results were found by surveying 3,000 Australians and were published earlier this month in the International Journal of Psychology. Researchers asked participants a series of questions about their sexual attractiveness, self-esteem, and how much sex they’re having. Hmm!
Once all the data was collected it was determined that people who feel that they are sexually attractive enjoy better sex lives than those who are not happy with their physical appearance or ability to attract a sexual partner. Also water is wet and tacos taste better when you’re drunk.
Anyone familiar with how sex works could tell you that confidence is the key to a healthy sex life. Regardless of how you look, loving yourself is the first step towards loving someone else which is why body positive media is really important for people who want everyone to be having sex if they want to.
Hearing someone confirm this through the scientific process just makes being right all the time more gratifying.
Regardless of sexual orientation or gender, people who indicated that they felt sexually attractive had more active and gratifying sex lives than people who felt unappealing to potential lovers. The survey makes no note of what these people look like and the purpose of collecting the data was strictly to determine how people feel about themselves.
Besides, attractiveness is subjective and you’re all beautiful to me.
Looking at the data a little deeper, women who believe they are sexy or that they can attract sexual partners are 10% more likely to have a gratifying sex life than men who feel the same way. However, men who know they look good have 28% more lovers than women. Hmm!
At various stages in my life I’ve had to get by on a “fake it till you make it” mentality with mixed results. My confidence comes from being good at what I do, and for the last four years that has been working as a freelance writer for a handful of clients. While I’m proud of the things I produce, I do miss being able to have more to talk about when a woman asks me what I do for a living. It doesn’t help that sitting in front of a computer for all this time has taken a toll on my health, but enough about me!
Confidence is sexy, and people who are constantly down on themselves tend to sabotage their chances of success with a potential lover by writing themselves off before they even try. That being said, if you aren’t having as much sex as you want to then perhaps doing something to boost your confidence could be the right call.
