Over the years we’ve read stories about strip clubs or adult stores near residential neighborhoods that weren’t very well received. Though many people may actively consume adult entertainment, they rarely want those establishments close to the areas they live in.
After all everyone loves sausage but nobody wants to see it being made.
However there are times when even the most lewd of adult oriented businesses are the preferred lesser of two evils. For example when the owners of a former porn studio in Bristol, England were looking to convert the unoccupied building into budget housing, residents were up in arms.
Neighbors of the building that was once used to film commercial fuck flicks and as space for cam girls feel that cheap housing would attract migrant workers or other temporary residents that would have little regard for any sense of community. Maybe both fences and porn stars make good neighbors.
As they see it, a 20-year-old single mother from eastern Europe who masturbates live on camera for spare change is fine as long as she doesn’t disturb anyone.
The building is owned by Mike Hobbins, and until recently was used by the husband of adult actress Cathy Barry to produce erotic content. Though the residents of St. George are up in arms over the idea of the building becoming a revolving door for travelers, workers, and ne’er-do-wells looking for temporary residence- they apparently weren’t concerned with what kind of porning went on behind closed doors.
The owner of the building wishes to convert it into a house of multiple occupancy, or HMO, with approximately 20 large bedrooms with their own bathrooms but a shared kitchen and other amenities. The layout sounds sort of like a hotel and residents of the St. George community are not happy about it.
According to one woman who has lived in the neighborhood for 11 years:
“The porn studio wasn’t really a problem and any problems we did have we spoke to the owner and it got sorted, but this is going to be 40 people coming and going every six months. It’s going to drive people out of St George. HMO is as many people as you can possibly get into a building per square foot. It’s people who are on short term rental contracts, so it’s not people who want to come and be a part of the community.”
That makes a lot of sense and it’s easy to see why neighbors would prefer a discrete permanent resident over a revolving door of carneys and other people simply looking to fart up a room for a few weeks before moving on.
Maybe this is a chance for the people of St. George to start a petition to convince another porn mogul to move their operation to their community. If they’re going to be picky about what the building is used for it would seem best to simply go back to what works. They just need a catchy slogan for their campaign like “We want porn shows not a bunch of HMOs”.
