Does watching porn make people less religious? (Discover Magazine)
If you had to guess, you’d probably say that people who watch a lot of pornography are less likely to be religious. And you’d be right — to a point. But according to this study, which looked at the connection between porn viewing and later religiosity, there actually appeared to be a more complicated relationship between porn and religious sentiments. More specifically, people who watched no porn were likely to be religious, and religious levels declined with more frequent porn use up to “once a week.” But as viewing got more frequent — up to “once a day or more” — religiosity actually went back up. This just might be the best use of our “Holy correlation, Batman!” blog post category to date!
Good God, that billboard is creepy.
- Touching robots can turn humans on, study finds (The Washington Post)
When humans’ emotions and attention are aroused, their sympathetic nervous system kicks in, filling their sweat ducts and increasing the conductance of the skin. That response was in full force during the study: When the 10 participants touched the robot rather than pointed at it, their physiological arousal rose. And for 90 percent of participants, arousal increased the more “off-limits” the body part got. Touching a robot’s hand or neck elicited a less significant response than touching the eye or buttocks, for example.
Humans are so weird, but also so amazing.

The Hidden Economics of Porn (The Atlantic)
Official records are hard to come by. Many productions don’t even keep official records, and there are very few researchers looking at the economic side of porn, because a lot of times for academics and researchers, pornography is viewed as a sort of LOL, to-the-side kind of thing, rather than the very serious financial and economic matter that it is. This is true for the industry’s revenues, but also for pay rates for individual actors. So those numbers get a little fuzzy, even though the industry is willing to say that it’s suffering from piracy and after the Great Recession, and things like that.
Hard facts about money are hard to come by in an industry that’s all about showing what is usually kept behind closed doors.
