Sex News: Porn Tax Proposal, Violence, & Legalizing Sex Work

Alabama is one step closer to mandating a 40 percent state excise tax on pornography — even online content.

The Alabama House Ways and Means Committee this week passed the proposed porn tax with a 10-4 vote on Wednesday in an effort to close a $200 million budget deficit.

If passed into law, the proposal would effectually place a tariff on the gross receipts from the sale, rental or admission charges of pornographic material disseminated in print, videos and online downloads.

Free-Sex-Protest

No word on whether they’re going to tax sex toys and the like, but that’s probs because it’s illegal to profit from the sale of sex toys in Alabama… the thought of which makes me want to cringe. Thank God, you can legally own a vibrator in Alabama, you know, as long as you order it online from out-of-state. Otherwise, I’d be afraid to think about all the wasted orgasm opportunities.

Men who pay for sex may be more inclined to sexual violence and have less empathy for women, according a study that madeheadlineslastweek. But critics say there’s reason to doubt the study’s reliability and, more importantly, that the authors miss the point when it comes to the rights and well-being of sex workers.

Sex-Workers

The study saying that men who buy sex are more prone to violence has been used by those who are opposed to the legalization of sex work to strengthen their stance, but the study itself has many faults and it fails to take into account the fact that legalizing sex work would provide a framework for the protection of sex workers. That is something that can not be ignored when talking about the risks of the sex trade.

PRO

  • Creates additional tax revenue to be withheld from women’s health care
  • Bold new frontier of Yelp reviews
  • Politicians caught soliciting prostitutes can boast about supporting small businesses
  • Would free up law enforcement agents to finally win that war on drugs
  • Saves us from any chance of a modern reimagining of Risky Business
  • Probably a little easier than convincing everyone to stop

CON

  • Sex is wrong
  • One more group we’re forced to acknowledge as human beings
  • Commodifies women without the benefit of a two-year contract from Maybelline
  • With legalization of marijuana and gay marriage, news outlets can’t afford to lose another source of endless debate
  • Clients will still be terrible people
  • If we let consenting adults have sex, who knows what else they’ll want permission to do?

Legalizing-Prostitution

That about sums it up.
