Bo Derek is a strange bird. I was primed to start this blog post by saying I don’t get the fanaticism around this chick, but then I educated myself by reading her Wiki page and I’m kind of obsessed. Bo Derek (nee Mary Cathleen Collins) was your typical Californian hot bod… when she was sixteen she “unintentionally” dropped out of school when she decided to go surfing everyday instead of sitting down in a stuffy classroom learning math.
The blonde bombshell eventually went back to school only to drop out permanently when she met a married man thirty years older than her; a Hollywood heartthrob that went by the name John Derek (The Ten Commandments, Exodus). The two became romantically involved while filming a movie in Greece. They later moved to Germany where John could avoid such pesky little things as statutory rape laws.
Not illegal in Germany.
The two love birds returned to the States when Mary Cathleen Collins was no longer a minor, which is when Cathleen received a Hollywood makeover and became Bo Derek; the original Courtney Stodden (a.k.a. the teen bride). Bo was 23 years old by the time she landed the role that would catapult her to fame, playing Dudley Moore’s version of the perfect woman, in the movie 10:
Yup, that’s the one.
Apparently, the perfect woman styles her hair in braided cornrows and runs on the beach in a tan bathing suit. That right there is what turned Bo Derek into an international sex symbol. From that moment on, Bo’s movie mogul husband tried to keep the fame working for him by casting his wife in sexy movies where he could showcase her young, nubile body.
People lapped it up, but they also universally panned every single movie the two every did together. Tarzan, The Ape Man; Bolero; and Ghosts Can’t Do It won several razzies and cemented Bo Derek in everyone’s mind as the worst actress ever. Personally, I think that’s a bit harsh. I’m more of a mind to think the fault lies with her cradle robbing husband. It’s not like those movies were stellar to begin with.
