And then comes along a person [Sunny Leone], who refuses to play by the rules of our patriarchal society. She won’t hide her adult career. She even refuses to apologise for it or come up with some sob story about how she was forced into it.
She admits she did it for money, and doesn’t see anything wrong with it. The concept of a woman who proud of her own sexuality is thoroughly terrifying to patriarchy, whose aim is to keep women subdued. And every movie she’s in, despite the plot or lack of, she’s the main draw instead of her male co-stars.
Sunny Leone is a role model in a patriarchal society were a lot of women aren’t free to make their own choices in regards to their own sexuality, who they choose to marry, and whether or not they choose to have kids. By making her own choices, forging the way, and demanding that her sexual freedom be respected Sunny had become India’s worst nightmare, at least, for those who want to hold on to a more traditional way of life. To me, she’s a goddamn miracle.
Bad news, America: You cannot be addicted to porn. You cannot be addicted to sex. You cannot be addicted to masturbation, or the Internet, or shopping, or television, or eating, or your iPhone or Instagram or Facebook or silly cat videos, or cupcakes, or The Bachelor or even sublime designer leather goods that smell like God and feel even better on your bare and willing skin. Ahem. […]
It’s mostly a lie, of course. Bogus. Largely a myth, crutch, excuse. Sex addiction isn’t a thing. Neither are any of the others, not really.
Do you already know? You can’t, medically speaking, be truly addicted to a behavior, or an entertainment, or a device, or even most foods or medications. Even clinical addiction – alcohol, cigarettes, heroin, et al – is still, in many circles, up for debate as to its real nature and true causes (and fixes). Don’t tell Big Pharma. Or your therapist.
Sex addiction isn’t real, and when it comes to the Christian right it’s often used to excuse a sinners actions (i.e. Josh Duggar). That said, just because sex addiction isn’t real that doesn’t mean you can’t develop disturbing and profoundly unhealthy habits. What all this means is that you have to take responsibility for your own choices and you can’t blame it on the big bad sinners, like pornographers, and, you know, women in general.
