When the British Government enacted laws that required all internet service providers to filter online pornography, it made quite a stir. The filters were put in place to prevent children from “accidentally” accessing porn and though they could be removed at the request of the customer, it made it difficult for honest masturbators to access the good stuff while maintaining their privacy.
And then there’s India.
When India’s Parliament decided to block 857 websites that “transmit content that violates morality and decency,” the nation’s ISPs were forced to ban access to internet porn for good. No amount of phone calls could remove the filters, leaving India without internet pornography- unless someone happens to know an IT expert capable of circumventing them.
To Kamlesh Vaswani this is great news.
The activist lawyer has been hounding the government to do something about explicit content on the internet because, as he describes it, internet porn is worse than Hitler and AIDS. That’s pretty bad!
In a document released by Vaswani prior to the parliament’s decision to ban internet porn, he said:
“Nothing can more efficiently destroy a person, fizzle their mind, evaporate their future, eliminate their potential or destroy society like pornography. It is so terrible that many do not even recognize it until it is too late, and most refuse to admit it. It is worse than Hitler, worse than AIDS, cancer or any other epidemic. It is more catastrophic than nuclear holocaust, and it must be stopped.”
Like many people, Vaswani blames porn for the increase in violent sexual crimes being committed in India. He sees the ban as a way of protecting India’s women and children and blames men who watch porn for being perpetrators of these heinous crimes. When asked about women who may watch porn, the lawyer rejected such an absurd notion.
“To say Indian women watch porn is an insult to their dignity,” he said.
At any rate, we can only assume Kamlesh Vaswani does a tremendous amount of good for his community as an activist lawyer. Sexual crimes are no joking matter and it’s certainly worth looking into any means of stopping this epidemic of violence. That being said, banning pornography seems like kind of a knee jerk reaction to a greater problem.
After facing criticism from both the Indian people and international news sources, the government caved and lifted the ban just a few days after enacting it… sort of.
The government told ISPs to allow any pornography sites that don’t depict illegal or violent sexual acts, but gave them no guidelines or official means of determining which content that is. Until that’s all sorted out, porn for all intents and purposes is still banned in India.
