Friction Friday: “Vox” By Nicholson Baker Is My Fantasy Come True

I just finished reading Vox by Nicholson Baker and I gotta say I was pretty impressed. It’s one of those books that feels like the author just reached into my brain and committed everything he saw in there to the page. In case you’re wondering, it’s about a man and a woman who have a phone conversation, which eventually escalates into full-blown phone sex.

Do you remember those party lines that were really popular in the ’90s? I don’t know if hotlines are still around, but once upon a time, late night TV was littered by ads featuring a woman laying on a couch, twisting a phone cord in her fingers and inviting you to make a call.

Jim and Abby meet over one of these party lines… and that’s it. The entire book is their conversation. You might think it would be a boring read, but it’s interesting, because through their conversation you’re able to explore your deepest desires.

“When I masturbate and I’m not in the shower, I need my breasts to be tended to, but, boo-hoo, there’s nobody to tend to them, so what I do is I pull my bra down so that the edge of it catches under my nipples, and then they’re all taken care of, and I can use both hands to tend to matters below.”

“This is a miracle,” he said.

“It’s just a phone conversation.”

I’ve had my fair share of phone sex (I was in a long distance relationship) and I really got into it. For most people it serves as a substitute for when you can’t have the real thing, but for me it became a supplemental aspects of my sexuality. It really gets me off is what I’m saying.

When the aforementioned long distance relationship ended I was chatting up a few people on online dating sites and there was this one guy I was chatting with IRT where things started getting hot and heavy, but it’s mighty difficult to type and tend to matters below at the same time. The whole thing was a big tease, I was getting really pent up and I wasn’t able to do anything about it.

On a whim, I IM’d him my telephone number. I had just enough time to head to my bed, dim the lights, and get under the covers with my favorite vibe before the phone rang. When I picked up the phone I didn’t say anything. I was already masturbating and I hoped my moans and heavy breathing would suffice as an introduction. We had amazing phone sex. There’s something that really turns me on about hearing the sounds that someone makes when they pleasure themselves.

At the end of the phone call, we came simultaneously and it was only in the afterglow that we greeted each other and said goodbye. We never spoke to each other again, but while it lasted it was a miracle.
