Playboy is no longer doing nude pictorials, yo. It’s quite a change. For the last 60 years or so Hef and company have been churning out one of the most popular skin mags that has ever existed. As far as brands go, Playboy is king. Of course, the crown hasn’t been as nice and shiny ever since the advent of the Internet and the popularity of online porn, but that doesn’t mean the familiar bunny logo doesn’t still hold significance in the adult world.
Who knows where this new editorial take on the magazine will lead, hopefully, they will revamp the entire magazine and not just keep the same old content and the same old layout minus the nudes. I would like to see a Playboy revival of sorts with amazing pictorials and iconic photography that pushes the boundaries, you know, like it used to.
There was a time where just the cover of Playboy mag could cause a scandal, or at the very least, get enough people talking to sell the magazine like hot cakes. To celebrate such a rich history, here are some of my favorite iconic Playboy magazine covers.
13.
Marilyn Monroe never posed for Playboy, but for his first issue Hef published some calendar pictures she posed for before becoming famous and the rest, as they say, is history.
12.
This cover celebrating bikinis marked the first time a woman appeared on the cover of Playboy wearing a bathing suit. So risque. It’s the tanlines that make this picture as good as it is, because it makes us feel like we’re seeing more flesh than were usually allowed to see.
11.
Before Cindy Crawford was an international supermodel, she was also a struggling actress and this Playboy nude photoshoot helped cement her rise to fame… as a model. Unfortunately, her acting career never really took off.
It’s a classic cover and for good reason, there’s no way you can stop yourself from wanting to open up and the mag and see more.
10.
Playmate Lorna Hooper is wearing the quintessential Mona Lisa smile and not much else. This issue, which challenged traditional gender roles, was one of the top-selling Playboy issues.
9.
Without Playboy magazine there wouldn’t be a Pamela Anderson and this right here is the picture that captured the nation’s attention.
8.
Playmate Donna Michelle recreated the iconic bunny logo with her legs in this classic cover. She looks like a ballerina.
7.
A camel toe, butt cheeks, a tan muscular body and light shinning just right between her legs… Beach parties never looked so good.
6.
A blackout panel made to look like a shirt you’re unzipping.. Genius! The barely visible puffy nipples are just the cherries on top of the cake.
5.
Personally, I find this cover kind of blah, but there’s no denying that this issue of Playboy helped launch Kim Kardashian’s career as the biggest celebrity in the world.
4.
A woman sitting alone in a dark theater about to slip a hand inside her panties?! This is the most overtly lascivious cover that Playboy has ever published. People were incensed. At the time, the magazine stood to lose millions of dollars in advertising, which caused Hef to rethink the racier content… or, at the very least, the racier covers. Too bad, because I really dig the art direction behind this shot.
3.
Whoa, Joan Baez… I hardly knew you. An amazing cover to accompany an amazing interview. Now, this is what Playboy should be trying to get back to.
2.
NYPD officer Carol Shaya was fired from her job for unauthorized off-duty employment and “improper” use of her uniform and the NYPD logo making this cover one of the most controversial Playboy covers of all time.
1.
The number one spot, however, goes to Darine Stern who was the first black woman to appear solo on the cover of Playboy. It only took 18 years, from the time the magazine published it’s first issue to the time this picture was published, but it was worth it.
Bonus:
The Darine Stern cover was so iconic Marge Simpson recreated it to celebrate the 20th anniversary of The Simpsons.
I’m a huge ran of the vintage covers, which featured less copy and focused primarily on one strong visual aesthetic. Playboy should publish a coffee table book of all it’s most iconic covers with info on the photographers, models, anecdotes, cultural impact, etc. I would buy it.
