Every time I get a cough or some kind of respiratory problem, I have an aunt who immediately warns me about toxic spores. She’s convinced that mold causes most of people’s chronic health problems and is quick to offer horrible worst case scenarios where you’re dead before the end of the week. She’s a lot of fun.
Obviously I ignore this flagrant fear mongering and like other 30-year-olds, I lie to my family about going to the doctor while waiting for my health problems to go away naturally. There are enough legitimate things to be afraid of in this world like bees and spiders. I’m not going to worry about second hand stories of mold growing inside someone’s body until I read about it in the news.
…Oh it happens all the time?
A woman from Florida named Anne Ziegenhorn made news when she was finally cured after suffering from an unidentifiable illness for nearly 4 years. She had experienced a range of symptoms including weight gain, vision loss, and burning pain that stumped doctors until Dr. Susan Kolb solved the puzzle- it was a moldy breast implant. Yikes!
I can almost imagine a bunch of doctors mulling over a stack of tests with a bunch of potential diagnoses scribbled on a white board. Over the 4 years she suffered with moldy tits, Ziegenhorn was diagnosed with everything from thyroid problems to lupus. Unfortunately none of the treatments they offered provided her with any relief.
“I felt like that was it, I was gonna die, and the doctors were gonna let me die,” she said.
That was when Dr. Kolb stepped in and solved the puzzle, kind of like Dr. House in the final 10 minutes of an episode. After presenting the diagnosis to the Ziegenhorn, she agreed to have her 15 year old implants inspected at which points surgeons found the moldy saline bags. Yikes!
Kolb is well aware of the medical problems that can arise from old breast implants. Over her years in the medical industry she’s seen multiple illnesses caused by moldy implants with faulty valves. The silicon shells of the implants can also cause complications over time, and she recommends breast implants be replaced every 8 to 15 years. Good to know!
Now that Anne Ziegenhorn’s crisis is over, she’s trying to help other women who may be unknowingly suffering from the same problem.
Her moldy boobs cost her thousands of dollars in medical bills and years of suffering that took a toll on her career and marriage. She hopes her experience will help educate women and potentially prevent anyone from suffering the same fate.
